Off-Base Percentage is a weekly post about the lighter side of sports, mainly baseball. Whether it occurs on the field, in the locker room, or in the media, if it is a little ‘off-base’ then it is fair game. If you are looking for analysis of a player, team, or sport it won’t be found in this post. This is for the sports fan that wants to take a step back and look at sports from a ‘different’ angle. Enjoy.
Better late than never, right? This is a special edition of Off-Base Percentage–evening style. I am sure most baseball fans saw the headlines about the St. Louis Cardinals including the ‘rally squirrel’ on their World Series Championship rings. If you haven’t heard that, well here’s a glimpse. It’s that little underline of the ‘L.’
That got me thinking. What could other teams put on their rings should they win a World Series in the near future? Well, I didn’t have enough inspiration or imagination to go through the rest of the league but here are a few of my favorites.
Los Angeles Angels – Rally Monkey – This little guy came around LA in June of 2000 against the San Francisco Giants. It was originally a video clip of the monkey from an Ace Ventura movie and after the Angels came back to win that game the real thing started to be a nightly occurrence. If the Angels were to win a World Series they would owe a lot of it to not only Albert Pujols but also the Rally Monkey.
Philidaelphia Phillies – Green Man – I am a fan of the FX comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and that is where I first got a glimpse of the green man. He is basically just a man in a green full body, face-covering spandex suit. I’m not sure where it originated, possibly the legend of Green Man, Raymond Robinson, a man without a face from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. However, I cannot be sure. I have seen the green man in a few Phillies highlights and I think that could be a small touch to Cliff Lee‘s World Series ring should he win one.
Chicago Cubs – Billy Goat or Steve Bartman – Both of these are seen as goats in Chicago, and both are seen as curses. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908 and these are just two of the reasons that diehard fans have for their lack of success. The Curse of the Billy Goat was when the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, Bill Silanis was kicked out of a Cubs’ World Series game for his goats odor. As he left he murmured, “them Cubs, they aren’t gonna win no more.” And so far he is right. I am not even going to go into Steve Bartman’s situation. Even people that don’t even know about baseball know that he’s been through enough. If the Cubs ever win another World Series one of these would be a great homage to remember what they have accomplished.
Cleveland Indians – John Adams “The Drummer” – I couldn’t leave my home team out of the equation. John Adams has been beating his bass drum up in the bleachers since 1973. That is longer than most of the players on the current roster have been alive. The players may switch dugouts, the stadium may change names, but Adams is always up in the bleachers rooting for a rally. He epitomizes Cleveland fans and if, by the grace of God, the Indians were to win a championship it would be great to see his drum in the ring somewhere. He’s had a bobblehead day and a beer named after him he deserves to be on a ring too.
