The 2012-13 Premiership campaign is about three weeks old. But in those short weeks a lot has happened. Manchester United got off to a slow start losing two of their first three games. Clint Dempsey went to Tottenham instead of Liverpool. Robin van Persie moved to Manchester United (maybe that’s why they are off to a slow start). And Chelsea sits atop the table after Didier Drogba left the club for China.
After all of that has happened I feel like I can start to formulate my picks for the top four teams and the league champion. A little late, I know.
Top 4: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United.
This is really no shocker that these four are going to end up near the top. Right now Man U and Arsenal are on the outside looking in after starts that they would rather forget. However, we all know that Manchester United is going to be up in the mix of things challenging for the league title. Wayne Rooney simply won’t settle for anything less. And if you have been starting for Manchester United since you were sixteen years old people on your squad probably respect and listen to you. The addition of RVP may have created a power struggle up top, but Sir Alex Ferguson will put things together in the next few games.
Arsenal as well as Liverpool has been known in recent years for underachieving. Liverpool has taken things to a new level by being in the bottom three after three games. Arsenal, however, has found new life and if they can fair well away from Emirates and get good results against the other Big 3 then I expect them to be a solid number four.
Chelsea and Manchester City have proven they belong up top already. Chelsea seems to be clicking well after losing their long-time goal scorer in Drogba. Fernando Torres has started to come into his own with two goals in three games now that he doesn’t have to share the spotlight. Man City, though they drew against the lowly Liverpool, have still looked to be near top form. Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure have been superb in the young season and the team will only get better. Once they improve their ability to finish Chelsea will have a tougher time staying atop the league.
League Champion: Chelsea.
Torres has something to prove this season and so does Chelsea. Three wins in three games is just the start they were looking for. Both Manchesters will come close but in the end they will fall short of Chelsea.
Dark Horse: Tottenham.
Call me biased, but the addition of U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey in my opinion vastly improves this squad who already has Aaron Lennon, Rafael van der Vaart, and Gareth Bale. They are near the bottom of the standings right now, but I like their style of play and they always seem to give my predicted top four tough matches. I could see them sneaking into the fourth position if things fall their way and Dempsey proves to be a great signing.
There are still thirty five more games in the league so my predictions are not as late as they seem. So in a few months we will see how close I am with my less than bold predictions. Meanwhile I will enjoy watching Liverpool continue to struggle. Mainly because the Fenway Group owns them. Sorry Liverpool fans.
Who will win the EPL? Will Torres be the high scorer? Will Dempsey make the US proud in England? Let me know in the comment section or on Twitter @Believelander.
