Thursday morning has already kicked off with more NFL changes. Reggie Bush may be leaving the New Orleans Saints after all to go to the Miami Dolphins and Albert Haynesworth is headed north to the New England Patriots.
Veteran quarterbacks found new homes on Wednesday with Donovan McNabb going to the Minnesota Vikings (what is it with this team and aging quarterbacks?) while Matt Hasselbeck lands across the country with the Tennessee Titans.
On the college front, UNC fired football coach Butch Davis under questionable timing.
With the trade deadline getting closer, it looks like Carlos Beltran may be trying the left coast with the San Francisco Giants. LA Angels Ervin Santana surprised everyone and pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday and the Seattle Mariners finally broke their 17-game losing streak against, yes, the Yankees, 9-2.
Chicago White Sox Win, Makes Trade
The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday, taking the second of three games for the series. Pitcher Chris Sale had 2 2/3 perfect innings to help the Sox win, pleasing Sox manager Ozzie Guillen with the following comment:
“Sale has come up huge,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “That was the best part of the game, when Sale did what he did.”
Earlier in the day, the team changed up their pitching stable by trading Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen to the Blue Jays for reliever Jason Frasor and pitching prospect Zach Stewart. This trade cut $9.5 million off the team’s payroll.
The Sox will host the Boston Red Sox this weekend in a three-game series.
Chicago Cubs Lose, Carlos Zambrano on the Trade Block?
The Chicago Cubs lost on Wednesday. Again. Against the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0.
Carlos Zambrano was on mound for the loss, snapping his seven-game winning streak. The fiery, high maintenance pitcher is rumored to be on the trade block but Zambrano has expressed interest in staying with the team as long as there’s “change.” Lots of change.
The Cubs will wrap up the series today and then head to St. Louis for a weekend series.
Chicago Bears Sign Draft Picks, Greg Olsen on the Trade Block?
On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears inked four-year deals with two draft picks: Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle and West Virginia linebacker J.T. Thomas.
Bears tight end Greg Olsen is rumored to be on the trade block after an awkward move by his agent Drew Rosenhaus on Wednesday evening and quarterback Jay Cutler may have called off his engagement after his fiance Kristen Cavalleri didn’t want to move to Chicago.
Big Ten Football Media Days Begin
To kick off the two-day event, this morning the Big 10 announced its inaugural 12-player, media panel-compiled Football Preseason Players to Watch List.
Meet the players:
The Legends Division: quarterbacks Denard Robinson (Michigan), Kirk Cousins (Michigan State) and Dan Persa (Northwestern), defensive tackle Jared Crick (Nebraska) and linebacker Lavonte David (Nebraska).
The Leaders Division: quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase (Illinois), wide receiver Damarlo Belcher (Indiana), center Mike Brewster (Ohio State), defensive tackle John Simon (Ohio State), linebacker Michael Mauti (Penn State) and running backs Montee Ball and James White (both Wisconsin).
